I want you to hold my hand...

...like we're going steady, okay?

I need your opinion.

If a book manuscript is around 75,000 words (including notes and bibliography but not including index), is that okay?

Yes. You should get an editor to hold your hand, or at least your adviser, but I think that is okay.

Don't add anything. Be ready to cut at editorial suggestion. But don't freak out because it's 75,000 words, counting the notes.

Yes. Remember, shorter is better than longer.

Yup. Everything I've heard and read suggests publishers are very happy with mss that fall in the 60k-80k window, so you're right on target.

Palgrave's limit for the New Middle Ages is 90,000 words, which includes notes and bibliography, but not index. You're golden.
