In Grading Jail

Do not pass "go"; do not collect $200...

By the way, when do we get those checks from Bushy? I could use an extra $600 right now...

I am under a mountain of present and impending grading: undergrad exams, undergrad thesis statements, gradute student precis and annotated biblios.

Oh my.

I should just bite the bullet and have a standing order at Papa John's. There's nothing for grading except pizza and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

What a Friday night, huh??

Coming up for air...

....(*gasp!*)......(*splash, splish, splash*).....(*cough, cough....gag...*).....

Medieval Woman slowly struggles to the surface of the dark, oily water called: GRADING!

These exams are chained to my feet like cement blocks - I can't shake them, I don't even seem to make a dent in them! And I'm teaching Julian of Norwich tomorrow which continues to be a struggle for me - the students just *hate* her brand of mysticism and I can't help feeling like it's because I'm not teaching it well enough. Has anyone else had this experience with Julian?

On top of everything else, I'm totally exhausted - I can't seem to get enough sleep! So much crap to do and the lovely momentum I'd built up on my article has now petered out because I have to teach and grade (whine, whine...).

Cat Update:

Furball #2 is fine, though her pride is a tad bruised. She got 2 teeth removed and her kidney function is perfect, thank the gods. However, she got so worked up that she gave herself a stress-induced bout of cystitus (spelling?) which basically read as a bad UTI and now seems to have cleared up after another trip to the vet today. I'll keep her on antibiotics for another week and by then she'll really try to kill me in my sleep...at the moment, her furry, beknighted, slightly rotund form is draped sullenly on the fainting couch.

.....but why??

[PSA: The following represents an only slightly edited email exchange between me and one of my students.]

Cheeky Student: "Prof. Medieval Woman, I just received the mark you gave me for our course and I'm absolutely shocked. It was substantially lower than I had expected. Can you explain this?"

Prof. MW: "Yes, Student, I can explain this. You failed the final exam and made a C- on your final paper."

CS: "But I don't understand. What were the points you gave me for each section of the final?"

PMW: "I don't know - the exams are now happily ensconced in the English Dept. office. You are welcome to stop by and pick up your exam any weekday before 4pm."

CS: "But I'm in [city across the country] already. Can you go check?"

PMW: "No."

CS: "I can't believe how unfair and uncooperative you're being. I studied SO hard for your final and wrote my best essay and you still gave me a really low grade."

PMW: "I'm sorry that you're discouraged by the grade you earned in my class - and, Student, please note my rhetoric in this sentence: I do not *give* grades; students *earn* grades. I'm afraid that the work represented in your final exam and final paper did not merit a higher mark."

CS: "I want you to re-grade my final paper - I can email you a copy. I think this is only fair."

PMW: "It is my policy to grade papers only once in my courses - they are usually not any better a second time. Indeed, it would be very unfair to your classmates if I were to give you another bite at the apple. If you were able to bring in the paper that I graded, we could set up an appointment to discuss my comments if any of them are unclear. But, barring that, I will not re-evaluate your grade."

CS: "This is so unfair. What good does it do you to ruin my dreams of graduating with honors? Why are you trying to ruin my life?"

PMW: "I'm glad that you set such a high value on this class. However, our discussion about this issue is over. You may continue this discussion with the Chair of the department if you like."

CS: "You'll be seeing me again next year - I'm going to keep taking this course as many times as I need to to get a passing grade."

PMW: "Alas, you will be unable to take another course from me. I have taken a position elsewhere. As far as I know, the department has no plans to offer this course again. I wish you the best of luck in your future studies, and I hope you get eaten by a walrus."**

CS: "This is SO unfair."

Bloggy Silence

To all those who might have been wondering if I'd been trapped under a large piece of furniture - I've actually been on a strict low-blog diet for the past week. This means not posting much (I missed Friday Recipe Blogging, but will make it up this next week) and only reading a couple of randomly selected blogs for a few minutes. I'm on my last set of papers, but I have a new set of 30 exams to grade and I'll be getting in about 80 more tonight when I give my other 3 hour final from 7-10 pm on a Sunday! I'm so bringing my Wendy's Big Bacon Classic to this shindig...grumble, grumble...

Speed Grading

One set down! Two sets to go! I'm barely commenting on them!

One exam to give tomorrow morning and one more on Sunday night!

The end is near - I can feel it in my bones...

Or more to the point, my hand... Writing cramp!

I am forcing myself not to read anyone's blogs because I'll get sucked in to the bloggy vortex! Hope all is well - by Sunday things will have calmed down enough for me to leave my burrow...
